Competition: Omnibus Essay Prize 2022

Are you under 19 years old and still in full-time education? If so, you are eligible to apply for the Gladstone Memorial Essay Prize offered by Omnibus this year.


This competition involves writing an essay on one of the following topics:


  1. What is the most interesting encounter between two characters in Greek tragedy that you have read, and why do you think so?

  2. What part does Ascanius play in the story of the Aeneid?

  3. In what ways is the Iliad the story of Ilion (Troy)?

  4. What did power look like in Classical Athens or Late Republican Rome or early Imperial Rome?

  5. What does Greek and/or Roman art tell us about Greek and Roman ideas of masculinity?

  6. What were the attractions to Plato or Xenophon of writing dialogues as a way of doing philosophy?

  7. Why does the modern world find the Romans so fascinating?


The first prize stands at £200, the second at £100. Essays must not exceed 2000 words.
