Overview

Explore the mythology and classical inspiration behind masterpieces of the Renaissance on an intellectual journey that spans art, history, literature, philosophy and language. 

Who is the Easter Course suitable for?

Anyone with personal or academic interests in Classics and Renaissance Florence! Spring is a perfect time to visit Florence in full bloom, before the summer heat arrives. Our April dates are particularly suitable for school teachers and university students on their Easter break. 

Content

The Easter course is a dynamic combination of art, literature and culture in context. Each morning will begin with an Italian class, followed by a study seminars on Classical sources behind Florentine literature and art. In the afternoons, students will see the artwork they have studied “in the flesh” at some of the most renowned museums, galleries and churches in the world. In the evenings, students are free to immerse themselves in the dolce vita with activities on our Cultural Programme such as wine or cheese tasting, life drawing and cookery classes plus access to authentic Florentine nightlife (aperitivo bars, jazz clubs, outdoor music events, opera, theatre, library lectures and film screenings). 

What's included?*

  • Italian language (1h Mon-Fri), Classical/Italian literature and art tuition (2h Mon-Fri). 

  • Guest speakers from a range of backgrounds. 

  • Entrance fees for all sites, museums, churches and gardens listed on the itinerary, such as the Uffizi, Duomo, Galleria dell’Accademia, Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardens. 

  • Any travel costs involved with site visits. 

  • 3 guided tours. 

  • A fine art class (3 hours) and wine-tasting or cookery experience. 

  • Small class size of up to 10 students. 

  • Access to all optional evening events in our Cultural Programme.

  • Shared accommodation in the historic centre (Option 1)

  • Library Membership. 

  • 24/7 staff assistance. 

  • Welcome Meal.

*Flights, transport to/from airport and accommodation, daily meals, travel insurance, medical and personal loss insurance are not included. Students must be 18 years old at the time of travel. Ask for the Provisional Itinerary by emailing us

A typical day 

9 - 10             Italian Class.

10 - 11           Classical sources seminar on Botticelli's Primavera,                                       Bandinelli's  Laocoon and Sons and Caravaggio's Medusa.

11 - 12           Guest Speaker lecture: Catullus and Petrarch.

12 - 2              Lunch

2 - 4.30           Visit the Uffizi to see the works studied this morning at                               first hand with a guide. Students will look for other                                     Classical finds, ready to report back tomorrow. 

7 - 9                Wine-Tasting and group dinner in Oltrarno. 

                        Free Time* or Opera 

*Free Time is factored into every day and there is no tuition at the weekend (perfect for a day trip to Siena, Pisa, Bologna or Cinque Terre). Students can use the library in their free time to study and read, which is open until 18:30 Monday to Friday. 

Accommodation  

Students who opt for Option 3 will live together in a Florentine palazzo apartment in the heart of the historic centre. The apartments consist of shared twin rooms, a kitchen and living area. There are plenty of other options for those happy to book their own accommodation, which we can help you with.
